Mass Graves and Killings in Chechnya
The
pictures show the death scenes taken during the first Chechen war by
members of the human rights group connected with the first independent
MVD Military Operation by Russian Federation Ministry of Internal
Affairs divisions in the village of Samashki against the peaceful
civilians of the village suspected of having accommodated Chechen
separatists. The disclosure of what happened was possible in particular
to Duma deputy Sergei Kovalyov (a former Soviet dissident, who served
12 years in Soviet labor camps for his beliefs). The pictures
are by the British anti-war activist Chris Hunter. [More info: By All Available Means: The Russian Federation Ministry
of Internal Affairs Operation in the village of Samashki: April 7-8,
1995 - Memorial Human Rights Center]. About the following
censorship of Russian authorities on this massacre read a short
account by Chris Hunter.
The massacre in Samashki

After
the embarrassing revealing of the massacre in Samaski Russian
authorities decided that human rights organizations, as any
international organization or independent investigators, must be
interdicted to visit the conflict zones and now any activity of press
correspondence is hindered. Nevertheless, despite the efficient Russian
censorship and disinformation, still something filtrates. It is
clear that under these conditions of a news blockade, all the available
pictures together don't show even one percent of the real situation.
Indeed the massive disappearances reported confirm that war crimes
continue without impunity throughout Chechnya till our days, and that
mass graves must exist almost everywhere.
