A message to our Christian friends
(Christmas 2001)

Harakah, 1 -15 January, 2002

As you take the time over the next few days to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ according to your faith and tradition, we in Harakah hope and pray that you have a joyous time with friends and family and wish you all good health and prosperity in the year to come.

We would like to draw your attention to some online information about the Islamic belief regarding Jesus with a view to clearing up any misunderstandings which may exist in your hearts and minds.

Do Muslims believe he was a Messenger of One God? YES.

Do Muslims believe he was born of a Virgin Mother? YES.

Do Muslims believe Jesus had a miraculous birth? YES.

Do Muslims believe he performed miracles? YES.

In addition, we want to remind you that in the traditional place of Jesus' birth, Bethlehem, where the hearts and minds of millions of Christians around the world will now turn, your fellow Christian brothers and sisters in faith, who just happened to be Palestinians, and love and respect Jesus just as much as you, are suffering as a result of the ongoing brutal Israeli military occupation of their land. There will be little joy and a lot of sadness this year in the city of Jesus' birth. "Oh little town of Bethlehem" is literally bleeding.

In conclusion, no matter what you choose to believe, or what faith you profess, as Muslims, we are taught to respect that choice and wish you no harm or ill will. We do wish that any misunderstandings and possible bad feelings which exist between our communities would be cleared up so that we can live in world full of peace and tranquility for all.

"O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)"
Qur'an 49:13
